Farm First Aid: What I Always Keep On Hand (and Why You Should Too!)
Farm life is a wild ride of blessings and bumps, so a trusty first aid kit is a must for tackling those goat kicks and bug bites!
Farm life is full of blessings—but it’s also full of bug bites, goat kicks, scraped knees, and sore backs. Sound familiar? Whether you’re wrangling chickens, weeding the garden, or just trying to keep up with daily chores, a solid farm first aid kit can save the day. Here’s my go-to checklist with a few personal notes on what works and why.
✅ Herbal Salve
For: Bug bites, stings, scrapes, sunburn, minor burns
I always keep a tin in my pocket. The herbs we infuse—like lavender, calendula, and mint—work wonders on itchiness, redness, and swelling.
Dab on mosquito bites right away
Soothes sun-kissed skin after long days outside
Great for cracked hands and heels too
✅ Raw Goat Milk Soap
For: Cleaning up cuts, scrapes, and grubby hands
It’s gentle but effective, packed with natural fats and vitamins. I use it to wash minor wounds before applying salve.
Rinse scrapes with warm water and this soap
Pat dry before applying anything else
✅ Magnesium Lotion
For: Muscle aches, cramps, tension, goat-related bruises
If your muscles talk back after a long day—rub this in. I’ve used it after hauling hay, trimming hooves, or standing at the market all day.
Massage into sore spots before bed
Helps with nighttime leg cramps too
✅ Bandages + Gauze
For: Covering scrapes, cuts, and blisters
Sometimes you just need a little protection so you can keep going. Keep a stash in the barn and house.
Wrap up after cleaning and applying salve
✅ Reusable Ice Pack
For: Bruises, bumps, goat kicks (yes, it happens!)
One time I turned my back and got a surprise nudge to the thigh… learned real quick to always have an ice pack nearby.
Toss it on bumps to stop swelling fast
✅ Water Bottle + Electrolytes
For: Preventing heat exhaustion and dehydration
When it’s 100° and you’re chasing goats—drink water! Add a pinch of sea salt or electrolyte mix.
Take a sip every time you switch chores
Don’t wait to feel thirsty
Farm Life Tip: Keep your kit stocked in the barn, house, and vehicle. You never know where you’ll need it.
