A Farmgirl’s Memorial Day: No Big Plans, Just What Matters
I looked up this week and realized—it’s Memorial Day weekend.
While others might be headed to the lake or river, we’ve got a wedding on Saturday and, hopefully, a few sweet moments with my granddaughter. The rest? Pretty normal around here—barn work, soap making, hoof trims, and a vet run.
But I’m thankful for the extra day. One more morning to sip my coffee slow. One more evening to soak in the quiet by the grill. Somewhere in between, I know I’ll get a call or a text—“Hey, what are you doing?”
And I’ll say yes—and maybe be flipping Chad’s amazing Venison Burgers.
Because I’ve learned that tending to the people God’s placed in my life is just as important as tending the land and animals. I can get caught up in the never-ending to-do list of farm life—but relationships are what keep this place rooted.
So this Memorial Day, I’m keeping things simple. Remembering those who sacrificed for our freedom. Making time for those I love. Letting the busy wait just a little longer.
Want to try those burgers? Here’s how we do them:
Farm-Style Venison Burgers
Ingredients (makes 4):
1 lb ground venison or beef
2 tbsp olive oil or melted tallow
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
Optional: 1 beaten egg or 1 tbsp mayo (for extra juiciness)
Instructions:
Gently mix all ingredients—don’t overwork the meat.
Form into 4 patties and press a little dimple in the center.
Grill over medium-high heat for 4–5 minutes per side.
Let rest before stacking with toppings like sharp cheddar, red onion, and pickles.
We usually serve ours with roasted sweet potatoes or something fresh from the garden.
What about you—how are you spending your weekend?
Whether you’re resting, remembering, or just catching up—don’t forget to make space for what really matters.
