FAMACHA Checking & Smart Deworming
What is FAMACHA?
At Double CF Farm, we prioritize responsible parasite management to ensure the health of our goats. The FAMACHA system is a targeted method for monitoring parasite loads and deworming only when necessary, helping to prevent parasite resistance and keep our herd thriving.
Why We Don't Deworm Every Goat
Overusing dewormers leads to drug-resistant parasites, making it harder to manage worms in the long run. Instead of routinely deworming every goat, we:
✔ Check eyelid color using the FAMACHA system.
✔ Only treat goats showing signs of anemia.
✔ Use pasture rotation, proper nutrition, and natural prevention methods.
How FAMACHA Scoring Works
The FAMACHA system is based on a simple eyelid color scale:
🟥 Dark Red: No signs of anemia, no deworming needed.
🟧 Pink: Mild anemia, monitor closely.
🟨 Light Pink: Moderate anemia, possible deworming required.
⬜ Pale/White: Severe anemia, deworm immediately and seek vet guidance.
Our Parasite Management Plan
We take a holistic approach to keeping our goats healthy and parasite-free:
🐐 Regular FAMACHA checks to catch problems early.
🌱 Rotational grazing to reduce reinfection from pastures.
🥩 Proper nutrition & minerals to boost immunity.
🌿 Herbal and natural parasite prevention to reduce chemical use.
